Las Iguanas has been nestled at Liverpool One for years now, and to be honest – it’s been one I’ve overlooked for some time. I remember heading there for cocktails one evening with my other half, and we had a fabulous night! But food… what was I too expect?
I was shocked. But brilliantly so.
The surroundings at Las Iguanas are cosy as we step in from the cold. We’re welcomed with warm faces who explain the menu and what we’re treated to this evening. It’s bad to enter somewhere with preconceived ideas, but this time it worked spectacularly well at proving me wrong.
We went all out. We sampled the tapas, and a main, and a side, and a dessert, and even took advantage of the 2 for 1 cocktail offer. It was totally worth it…
NACHOS: Corn tortilla chips with melted cheese, topped with pico de gallo salsa, jalapeños, tomato salsa, soured cream & guacamole. One with Shredded beef braised in chipotle and another with Smoked chipotle chicken
HAVANA CLUB & JERK BBQ GLAZED PORK RIBS: Fall off the bone individual pork ribs covered in a sticky rum glaze, topped with crispy onion & chilli.
PATO TAQUITO: Roast duck & caramelised onion rolled in a char-grilled flour tortilla, with spicy cranberry salsa.
ALBONDIGAS: Patagonian-style lamb meatballs with apple, mint, parmesan & a pinch of nutmeg. Braised in a rich tomato, mint & mild chilli sauce.
SEA BASS, CRAB & PRAWN: Sea bass fillet on a bed of spring onion rice with white crab & peeled king prawns in a tomato, coriander, basil, parsley, achiote & red pepper sauce.
CREAMY CARAMEL CAKE: Layers of soaked sponge & caramelised cream, drizzled with dulce de leche. Topped with more caramelised cream & blueberries.
This glorious amount of food for the two of us was definitely an ‘eyes bigger than our belly’ date. BUT, what we did get was actually one of the best servings of food that we’ve had since I started Liverpool Bloggers. Now that’s a statement!
The Nachos were fresh and tangy; the Ribs were ‘fall off the bone’ good; the Paquito was yummy with it’s own sweet chutney; the Albondigas was fragrant and tasty – and the Chipotle Rice was a perfect accompaniment. Topping it all off with a mouthwatering dessert that I’ve never had before. It was cakey and soft; sweet and beautifully rich. I’m salivating… apologies.
Staff at Las Iguanas looked after us from start to end, with nothing being too much hassle. With a sassy atmosphere that mixes the fun of cocktails with the freedom of tapas; it’s a great place for date night or a meal with friends that you’re looking to last that little bit longer. In a perfect location, it’s strange that it has taken so long to take a visit. I’m looking forward to more Caramel Cake. But not to share next time…
