The journey began when she was a little girl, playing with her mum’s make up and trying her luck in school with a bit of glam – usually ending in a baby wipe to the face. Melanie Doyle is now opening her own academy and writing book of her own – MelVicMakeup Artistry. Not only applying makeup to celebrities from Coronation Street to Emmerdale, and Dancing Mums to Downton Abby as a freelance for Le Maq Pro, she works as a Beauty Editor for Lash Inc. reviewing products, a magazine which is sold worldwide online and in print.
After studying art, photography and pottery in school, she went on to college for beauty therapy where the passion grew. Studying for two years lead to a job in a salon offering makeup services, and the decision of a career in makeup was made.
Teaching for 14 years, she was trained by Paulo Getteli, a famous Italian makeup artist with exceptional skills and enthusiasm for makeup. “Paulo really embraced his work and wanted to teach all he knew to his students, which is pretty much why I went into teaching. I loved the way it gave him such passion, and I wanted to be the same as him and share my new found skills once realising I was actually really good at the creative style in high fashion makeup.”
Melanie’s decision to open her own academy was spurred by her love of teaching, but the dislike of FE colleges, which she feels provide poor standards of teaching from other lecturers. So in February 2015, she signed the lease for her own academy. With top of the range equipment in a building with a bistro, art gallery and other businesses – the Bank Quay House at Warrington Town Centre in Cheshire is where Melanie comes into her own.
“It’s very exciting times. I’ve already had lots of interest from students wanting to pay and book onto courses already. My main selling point at the Academy is the up to date courses, with inspiring lessons in a state of the art makeup room with modern equipment, plus opportunities to do work experience with myself. I also have a photographic area in the academy, which is a unique selling point, as all students will have an opportunities to take photographs of their work throughout the course, with some students having a shoot with a professional photographer with portfolio images that will be just perfect to add to their book!”
Anything outside the box inspires the weird and wonderful artistic projects from Melanie, with her main passion being body art. She says: “I am inspired by art especially going to art galleries, from paintings to sculptures. They all give me ideas for my work. I like to day dream, and quite often crazy ideas spring to mind or I will use Pinterest to seek ideas, always using a variety of images on a mood board to help me create the theme I am hoping to achieve.”
A job as a makeup can take you places never dreamed of with Melanie saying: “A job as a makeup artists is a very enjoyable career, you get lots of opportunities to work all over the country and even all over the world if you have the right accredited qualifications. A career in makeup can also be very lucrative warning up to £300 per day in TV and for TV commercials even more!”
Short one day courses such as masterclasses on smoky eyes, eyebrows and contouring are available, plus teenage workshops on skincare and how to use your own makeup for those who want to learn basic tips and tricks. Media makeup, such as special effects and theatre, fashion, skincare, photographic makeup and full time programmes in level 2 and 3 media makeup are all setup at the MVM Academy.
