Students at Redbridge High School challenge the charts for the coveted UK Christmas Number 1 Top Spot to raise much-needed funds for their projects.

Pupils from the specialist school in Fazakerley recorded their song at Elevator Studios on Parliament Street, which owner Tim Speed let them use free of charge.

The school caters for 120 children and young people aged 11 to 19 who have autism, severe learning difficulties or profound and multiple learning difficulties.

Daniel Burns, a Learning Support Officer at the school who recently played the role of Father Christmas for the students, said: “It’s a great cause and the kids deserve all the praise and the rewards. They’ve loved being a part of the music video and they’re looking forward to seeing their single in the charts.

“It’s a brilliant idea and a fabulous way to raise much needed funds for specialist playground equipment and after school activities for our pupils. The song is wonderful, the lyrics speak for themselves and when you watch the video you can really see how much fun everyone had when making it. Fingers crossed lots of people will buy it and maybe we can make it to the top of the charts.”

A group of 10 including five pupils and three staff recorded the song, a Christmas ballad, with two musical friends helping out.

Redbridge teacher Pete Chadwick, whose idea it was to record the song, explained: “At a time of reductions in public sector funding schools are beginning to struggle to provide the same level of resources as they have in the past, particularly so for schools that provide for pupils with complex special educational needs.

“We wanted to look at a new and different way of raising funds and support for the school and our shared love for music took us down this route.”

‘Message of Christmas’ will be published by Liverpool-based Ditto, who have waived their usual fee and make the song available to purchase as a download from today (December 1st).

The school is hoping to raise as much money as possible, with last years’ after-school programme providing additional activities outside of school hours costing £16,000 to run. This year, Redbridge cannot fund this project and are hoping the popularity of the Christmas single will allow them to reintroduce the after school provision.

Tim Speed, director at Elevator added: “This is a fantastic and ambitious project by everyone at Redbridge. We’re happy to get involved and support them – here’s hoping they get the number one spot!”
